“Acting” Spiritual vs. “Being” Spiritual

The world we live in today is so much different than the world we were born into. We see changes everywhere; technology, philosophy, and perceived morality are just a few examples. One of the biggest changes we may or may not notice is the way we communicate! Social media seems to be the ruling mode of communication. The days of writing a letter to someone are gone. The days of picking up the phone and actually speaking will soon be a thing of the past. It seems that everything is done through the multitude of platforms we call social media. Perhaps the reason for it’s appeal rests with the ability to communicate a message instantly with millions of people that we’ve never actually met!

The message we portray may not be an accurate picture of who we really are … but whose to know? Social media allows us to become an actor or actress in our own production of what we call life. We can be whoever we want to be, because most people who will view our post don’t really know us!

Sadly, many Christians have the ability to “act” like a Spiritual man or woman on Facebook; but to the few who actually know them recognize that it’s not real! Our friends who have never become Christians see our “act” play out online, but they also see our “real” life everyday and they know that the two personas are not in agreement. Christ doesn’t want us to ACT Spiritual … he wants us to BE Spiritual. What is the difference between “Acting” Spiritual and “Being” Spiritual?

ACTING Spiritual is for others to see; but BEING Spiritual is what God sees!

This reveals who our most important target audience is.

ACTING Spiritual makes me feel better about myself; but BEING Spiritual forces me to see myself like God sees me.

This encourages REAL REPENTANCE and it motivates REAL CHANGE.

ACTING Spiritual is hypocritical; BEING Spiritual is sincere!

It is interesting that the Greek word for actor is actually “hypocrite”!
